Books A Million Closing in Mandarin

Though the Books-A-Million store off San Jose in Mandarin is closing, the company is actually trying to expand, by snapping up former Border’s locations since Borders closed its doors in early 2011.

BAM is closing four stores across the U.S., including the Mandarin location. With Borders on its way out, the Alabama-based Books-A-Million is now the second  second-largest bookstore chain in the United States, and it’s closing only a small portion (four of its 232 stores). Ironically, its sales were boosted by BAM offering the Barnes & Noble’s Nook. Since last fall, Books-A-Million has carried Barnes & Noble’s Nook, the sales of which helped its electronic commerce trade segment see a 24.3 percent increase in net sales for the quarter.

Lets Nosh Mandarin Jacksonville Fl

Oy – matzo ball soup, rugalach, whitefish stuffed cabbage.  My Mom created this and other Jewish gastronomic gems without a recipe in sight. Where are they now? I don’t expect any Carnegie or Katz's clones in the cradle of the southland, but a good knish?  It couldn’t hurt.

Metro Diner Mandarin Jacksonville FL

Banana Stuffed French Toast will soon be available at three locations, maybe more, in Jacksonville.  Oh goody.

Even before Metro Diner was featured on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” we gladly stood outside, summer and winter (or what we call winter), waiting for a table at Metro Diner in San Marco. We were blessed with a second location in Mandarin, at 12807 San Jose Blvd., near The Fresh Market and Hurricane Grill & Wings. The new location, thankfully, has  more space with its wraparound porch and outdoor seating for up to 32 more hungry customers.   More after the break...

Fun Facts: Harriett Slept Here

Harriet Beecher Stowe

In the 1870s and 1880s, Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family vacationed in what is now North Mandarin, on their St. Johns River estate. While living there after the Civil War, Stowe wrote Palmetto Leaves, arguably an eloquent piece of promotional literature directed at Florida's potential Northern investors at the time. The book was published in 1873 and describes Northeast Florida and its residents.  In 1870, Stowe created an integrated school in Mandarin for children and adults. This predated the national movement toward integration by more than a half century.

Opration Christmas Child Mandarin Jacksonville FL

Christmas is less than 60 days away, so there is little time to waste for Mandarin residents, (or those across the city) who want to contribute to Operation Christmas Child (OCC).  OCC asks contributors to fill shoe boxes with gifts for children overseas who are suffering from disease, famine, war, terrorism, and natural disaster. During National Collection week, November 14 and November 21, two designated Mandarin locations will serve as collection points.

Operation Christmas Child is part of the larger International Christian Relief Organization's Samaritan's Purse. Since 1993, OCC has collected and hand delivered more than 86 million shoe boxes to needy kids in 130 countries. Last year, 8.2 million shoe boxes were donated, and Northeast Florida's goal is to collect 28,000 boxes to help OCC's 2011 goal of 8.5 million.

First Watch Mandarin Jacksonville

When I’m in Orlando for more than a day, there are two places I must go to eat: First Watch and Toojay’s, (more about Toojay’s later. I’m heavily lobbying for one in Jax but have had no success). We have a burning need for decent breakfast places in San Jose and Mandarin. The only First Watch I’d ever encountered was in Orlando, and I could swear it was locally owned and operated. It had that familiar, welcoming feel from the waitstaff. The quality of breakfast and brunch food could give the Metro Diner a run for it’s money -- it’s that good. And even though folks from far and near (including me) will still frequent the Metro in San Marco,  it’s great to have the bar for quality breakfast food raised in Mandarin. I wish I’d known that they’d opened a location in Marsh Landing about month ago! I will be writing an angrily worded blog about our lack of a Toojays at a future date. http://www.firstwatch.com
